Johnathan Uhl's Book Report on "Holes"

Name:   Jonathon Uhl

Title of Book:  Holes

Author:  Louis Sachar

What was the problem in the book, and how was it solved? Be specific.
The main problem in the book Holes is that Stanley’s family was cursed.  This curse causes
Stanley to be accused of doing something he did not do.  The problem was solved when Stanley
carried Zero up the mountain on his back.  This broke the curse on his family. Another problem
was Camp Green Lake. The camp was also cursed.  After the curse was lifted, Camp Green Lake
was shut down, and the town once again had rainfall.

What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing the book? Explain how you know.
I think the author’s purpose for writing Holes was to entertain people.  The book was very
interesting from beginning to end.  It contained a lot of action and adventure. The author kept
my attention for the entire book.

What did the title have to do with the book?
The title of the book Holes tells what the book is centered around… holes.  Many holes are
dug throughout the book. Each hole had it’s own meaning.  The children must dig holes everyday.
These holes were supposedly meant to build character.  Stanley digs holes to find water for
himself and Zero and also to protect them. Finally, a hole is dug to find the treasure.

Tell in your own words how the setting of the story made it more interesting. Be specific.
The setting of the book Holes is interesting because it happens in three different places.
Most of the story takes place during the present day at Camp Green Lake. There are also
flashbacks to the 1800’s to the old town of Green Lake. There are also a few flashbacks to
Latvia. This made the story more interesting because it showed the drastic changes that
occurred to the are over time.

If one of the characters visited our classroom, what question would you ask them? (Make sure the
question relates to the plot/problem/actions of the story.) *Give the name of the character with the
question!!*
I would like to Zero to visit are classroom. I would ask, “ Zero, How did it feel to be a part of
a curse that lasted for over a century?”
Pretend you are a librarian recommending the book to someone. Write a paragraph telling what
you would say.
I would recommend the book Holes to anyone. Both young people and older people would
enjoy this book.  It is action-filled. There is never a dull moment.  Holes has a lot of adventures
in it.  It will keep you trying to guess what will happen next, and the book keeps surprising you.
This books leaves many clues for the reader to pick up on. Holes will also make you laugh.
Once you start reading this book, you will want to keep reading to you are finished. It never
gets boring. Holes also has some important lessons to teach.  Not only will you be entertained,
but you will learn something in the process.  The best part of the book is the ending. You must
read the book Holes!

If they made a movie of this book, which scene would be most important to include. Explain the
scene with details and why it's important.
I think the most important part of the book Holes that should be a scene in a movie is
when Zero’s great great great grandmother, Madam Zeroni, curses Stanley’s great great great
grandfather.  This is important to include in a movie because it is the basis on which the whole
story takes place. By showing this scene, everyone would be able to understand why all of the
bad things happen to both families.  Without this scene, one would not fully understand the
affects of the curse and why it happened.
