Name: Austin Krieg
Title of Book: The Boy On The Wooden Box
What was the problem in the book, and how was it solved? Be specific.
The main problem in this story is surviving. At this time, the Nazis were invading and taking over
Krakow. Leyson was eventually taken to a factory. While Leyson was there, the only thing he could
do was use a machine that he could only operate if he was on top of a wooden box. Oskar Schindler
was the factory owner and helped to save many Jewish lives by bribing the Nazis in command of
Auschwitz.
What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing the book? Explain how you know.
The author’s purpose in this story is to inform. The text is nonfiction and displays events that truly
happened in the past.
What did the title have to do with the book?
The book’s title is referring to Leon Leyson having to stand on a wooden box to do his job of
operating a machine, ,Leon being the main character and author of the book.
Tell in your own words how the setting of the story made it more interesting. Be specific.
With there being multiple settings in the book, they prove in each how brutal the Holocaust was,
even to a young boy. Each setting showed the horrific events that average people had to withstand in
order to survive.
If one of the characters visited our classroom, what question would you ask them? (Make sure the
question relates to the plot/problem/actions of the story.) *Give the name of the character with the
question!!*
If Leon Leyson were to visit our classroom, I would ask him how his life could have been different if
Schindler had betrayed the Jews in his factory or if he hadn’t bribed the Nazis, especially because of
how young Leon was.
Pretend you are a librarian recommending the book to someone. Write a paragraph telling what you
would say.
Leon Leyson was a man who was only 10 years old when he was forced to deal with Nazis and the
Holocaust. His experiences truly prove that anything is possible and that hope lies within any
situation. The book includes several horrific events that happened during the Holocaust, all of
which were definitely hard to bare for Leon. The events in this book, however, make a person
want to read more and I would definitely suggest some to read this book .
If they made a movie of this book, which scene would be most important to include. Explain
the scene with details and why it's important.
If this book were to be made into a movie, the most important scene would be where Leon’s
father is beaten and taken by angry Nazis. This scene is where Leon realizes that his family
isn’t immune to the tragedies of the Holocaust. It also shows the beginning of the terror he
and his family are going to deal with.
