Rachelle Fritz' Book Report on "Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie"

Name: Rachelle Fritz

Title of Book: "Drums, Girls, Dangerous Pie"

Author: Jordan Sonnenblick

What was the problem in the book, and how was it solved? Be specific. The problem was that Steven's
(the main character) little brother Jeffrey got leukemia. After Steven found that out he quit doing his homework
and he was going to fail 8th. His mom and dad were in debt and didn't have enough money to pay for Jeffrey's
cancer treatments and they were desperate. Steven visited the counselor everyday. Steven told the counselor
what happened to his brother, then the counselor told Steven's teachers. Steven's teachers helped him bring
up his grade but he didn't know what to do about the debt. Steven is an amazing drummer and he will be in the
"All-Star Jazz Band". His best friend Annette Watson and his crush Renee Albert planned a way to get Steven
money for his family. They decided to have a fundraiser for Jeffrey. For the fundraiser they sold pastries and
tickets to watch the "All-Star Jazz Band". The fundraiser was a success. They raised over $20,000 for Jeffrey's
cancer treatment.  At the end Steven didn't fail 8th grade and Steven's parents were debt free.

What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing the book? Explain how you know. The
purpose was to entertain the reader. I know the author wanted to entertain the reader because there
was foreshadowing in every chapter and it wanted you to read more and more of the book.

What did the title have to do with the book? The title "Drums, Girls, Dangerous Pie" has to do with
the book because Steven's favorite thing to do is play drums, girls because Steven had a crush on Renee
Albert but at the end he dated Annette Watson, and dangerous pie because Jeffrey's favorite food is
oatmeal and he calls it dangerous pie.

Tell in your own words how the setting of the story made it more interesting. Be specific. The
settings of the story made it more interesting because it gives you a visual of where the characters are.
If the family is at the hospital you can visualize what the hospital looks like. Or when Steven was performing
at the All-Star Jazz Band you can visualize what the stage looks like and what the instruments look like.

If one of the characters visited our classroom, what question would you ask them? (Make sure
the question relates to the plot/problem/actions of the story.) *Give the name of the character
with the question!!*
Steven: How did you pull off getting your grades up, practicing for your concert, holding a fundraiser for
Jeffrey, and still have time to eat and sleep?

Pretend you are a librarian recommending the book to someone. Write a paragraph telling what
you would say.
That book called "Drums, Girls, Dangerous Pie" is a book filled with adventure, sadness, and much more.
There is a boy named Steven and his brother got cancer so when that happened he had to get his grades
up and get money so his parents don't go in debt. Steven found a way to get his grades up and get money
for his parents.

If they made a movie of this book, which scene would be most important to include. Explain
the scene with details and why it's important.
The most important part that a movie about the book should include Steven making a bowl
of oatmeal to his little brother Jeffrey.  Then Jeffrey steps on the stool and falls. After that he
got taken to the hospital and finds out he has cancer. Finally Steven’s mother tells Steven that
Jeffrey has cancer.
