Title of Book: Small as an Elephant
Author: Jennifer Richard Jacobson
What was the problem in the book, and how was it solved? Be specific.
Jack lost his mother, and has to fend for himself. He takes care of himself by getting himself
food. He also searches for his mother along the way.
What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing the book? Explain how you know.
The author’s purpose is to entertain. The author tells a story of a boy who lost his mother and
the author isn’t trying to inform me of anything or persuade me in any way.
What did the title have to do with the book?
The title is “Small as an Elephant” and the main character, Jack, is fascinated with elephants.
Tell in your own words how the setting of the story made it more interesting. Be specific.
The setting is on a campground in Maine where Jack wakes up to find that his mother is nowhere
to be seen.
If one of the characters visited our classroom, what question would you ask them? (Make sure the question relates to the plot/problem/actions of the story.) *Give the name of the character with the question!!*
If Jack visited our classroom, I would ask him how he stayed so calm and how he managed to
fend for himself, because he is only a child.
Pretend you are a librarian recommending the book to someone. Write a paragraph telling what you would say.
I would really recommend this book. A kid named Jack is camping in Maine, but when he wakes up
he can’t seem to find his mother. He tries to call her but she won’t pick up her phone. Jack only has
$10 with him that he uses to buy food. Luckily, Jack sees his friend camping and has lunch with
them, but he won’t tell anyone about his mother going missing. He is worried that they will take
him away from his mother.
If they made a movie of this book, which scene would be most important to include. Explain the
scene with details and why it's important.
The most important scene would be when Jack sees his friend’s family and eats lunch with them.
This scene is most important I think because Jack hasn’t eaten in a while. He has barely any food
left so he didn’t starve because his friend happened to be camping too.
You had good facts and ways to back them up good job!
